Final assembly of the first copy of the A330 Beluga XL¹ began in December 2016 on the A330 chain, without however integrating the front section, the fin and the PHR. The rear section is partially cut on the upper part to receive the structural elements specific to the Beluga XL. These will be added in the building intended for the production of Beluga XL, the L74 located on the Jean-Luc Lagardère site (where the A380 factory is also located)
The first flight was made in 2018 for entry into service in 2019.

After the launch of the A310 in 1978 and the A300-600 in 1981, Leiden decided to study a project taking over the fuselage section of the A300 / 310 but with a much larger wing, provisionally called TA9, with aim to compete with the new Boeing 767 by offering a device with a range of more than 10,000 km.
The militarized A330 MRTT is capable of simultaneously satisfying up to 60 tonnes of supplies and the transport of passengers and freight.
This is why it was chosen by the Pentagon on February 29, 2008 as KC-X, to replace 179 aging KC-135s
